Moving money shouldn’t be a skill you need to master. You shouldn’t have to understand how the underlying technology works before sending dollars.

There are 550 million people worldwide holding over $185 billion in USDT circulation. That’s more than the GDP of at least 120 countries. For many of them, stablecoins are the most reliable form of money they can access without a bank.

Today, Tether remains the dominant stablecoin issuer. Yet, for over a decade since its launch, it moved money on congested, costly rails built for other purposes.

This is the gap Stable.xyz is building into.

The Accidental Dollar

Adoption of USDT has shot up since its launch in 2014. Although Tether launched it as a bridge between fiat and cryptocurrencies, people used it as a trading pair on crypto exchanges.

Few could have imagined it becoming a safe store of value.

In 2014, Venezuelans saw their local currency, bolivar, depreciate by 99%. In 2024, Argentinians faced 300% inflation. Neither wanted a digital dollar to trade on exchanges. They just wanted to hold their money with minimal friction. USDT allowed them to do that on their phones, without requiring a bank account.

Twelve years after its launch, USDT has evolved into a tool for financial inclusion. Although that’s not what its founders had initially planned.

In October 2025, Tether’s CEO, Paolo Ardoino, called Tether’s USDT “likely the biggest financial inclusion achievement in history” when it crossed 500 million users. Earlier this month, that number surpassed 550 million users across emerging markets.

The product was perfect — but there was a problem: inefficient infrastructure.

The Borrowed Rails Problem

The people in both Argentina and Venezuela were running their financial lives on blockchains that were not designed to do that.

Ethereum was built for decentralised applications. Tron was built as a decentralised platform with high throughput to enable creators to own, share, and monetise content without intermediaries. Stablecoins used these chains, but lived with frictions.

For example, if you choose to send USDT from your MetaMask wallet, you must pay a gas fee in ETH. You could hold a million dollars in USDT and still be unable to move it without a few dollars’ worth of volatile assets you didn’t want in the first place.

I also wrote about how crypto’s technical sophistication drives people away. That’s when you see 716 million global crypto owners, with less than 10% of them transacting actively every month.

What would a payroll team do if they didn’t have enough ETH to pay the gas fees? Figure out how to bridge or swap some ETH? I’d bet they’d give up and go back to moving money via SWIFT or banking channels. Maybe they are slow and annoying, but at least you know what timeline to expect.

What’s more frustrating is that the payroll team might not break a sweat to receive some stablecoins, only to be stuck with them without understanding why the payment wouldn’t go through.

The general-purpose chains have issues beyond just paying gas fees.

When a memecoin launch spikes network activity on a general-purpose chain, it forces a Nigerian freelance artist awaiting their monthly payment to compete with speculative trades for the same block.

It gets worse for the institutions. When blockchains become congested with DeFi activity, like lending and trading, the payroll has to either pay higher gas fees or wait. Businesses running vendor settlements and treasury operations can’t build their payment flows around fees that fluctuate by double-digit percentages in a single day.

A U.S. business sending $1,000 to an Indian contractor via SWIFT pays at least $50 in wire fees, intermediary charges, and FX margins. But who are we fooling if we replace these cost savings with uncertain gas fees?

Then, there’s also the privacy problem.

Public blockchains are transparent by design, making them auditable and trustworthy. But the boon turns bane for businesses. Transparency of a treasury team’s wallet flows can reveal its strategy to competitors.

General-purpose blockchains like Ethereum and Solana offer higher speed and cost efficiency than traditional SWIFT payment infrastructure, but they do not provide confidentiality for sensitive information. That’s because they were never designed to solve this.

However, the demand for stablecoin infrastructure was only exploding.

In 2025, adjusted stablecoin transaction volume reached $10.1 trillion, up 75% from the previous year. The gap with payment giant Visa is only shrinking with each quarter.

Yet, the infrastructure couldn’t keep up with the growing number of digital dollars they carried.

Need for New Rails

In the past year, a new category of blockchains has emerged specifically to facilitate stablecoin transactions.

The idea was that the masses deserved infrastructure built from the ground up if they were to adopt stablecoins as the default way to move money.

Each blockchain offers unique features.

In September 2025, Plasma launched a blockchain that enabled payments using zero-fee USDT transfers and a Bitcoin-secured foundation. It offered an open ecosystem for developers to build geo-specific financial tools on a neutral settlement infrastructure. Two weeks ago, Stripe and Paradigm-incubated Tempo launched a stablecoin-agnostic Layer-1 network to facilitate payments. This network supports any dollar token and has partnered with institutional giants like Visa and Mastercard to establish a payment standard for AI agents.

Then, there’s Stable.xyz.

Plasma supports payments across multiple stablecoins, including USDT, while Stable.xyz is building its entire chain’s economy around USDT as its foundational layer.

Stable’s payment blockchain uses USDT0, LayerZero’s omnichain version of USDT, as the native gas token. This means validators earn USDT, the treasury holds USDT, and every transaction on the chain pays fees in the same asset. The chain’s security, governance, and fee mechanics are denominated in the asset that half a billion people already use to move money. Businesses and individuals don’t need any other cryptocurrency to pay gas fees.

This architecture is designed for a specific use case, making it stand out from other payment-specific blockchains.

Plasma focuses on building a composable financial ecosystem for developers to build geographically specific applications on top of the blockchain. This is a developer-first bet on what stablecoin infrastructure should look like.

Stable, however, is solving a more foundational problem involving the payment corridor itself. It’s targeting the infrastructure that powers the $900 billion remittance market, cross-border vendor payments, and treasury operations moving millions of dollars in USDT every day.

For these transactions, users value predictability more than composability. They need infrastructure that can handle high volume without failure.

This is where Stable’s USDT Transfer Aggregator helps.

Most blockchains process transactions individually. When volume spikes, transactions can get stuck in a queue. The Aggregator solves this by bundling multiple USDT transfers into a single operation and processing them together. This reduces the per-transaction overhead.

Think of it as the difference between a highway where every vehicle pays a toll passing individually through a single lane versus a highway that allows 10 vehicles to pass through a toll booth at a time.

The aggregator saves processing overheads and cuts congestion.

The cost adds up quickly and bites hard in high remittance corridors, where peer-to-peer or retail USDT transfers occur in high volumes and with thin margins. A payment processor in a business running thousands of daily transfers cannot absorb unpredictable per-transaction costs.

In 2024, India topped the list of remittance recipients with $129 billion, followed by Mexico with $68 billion and the Philippines with $40 billion. Nigeria received about $20 billion. These four corridors collectively moved over a quarter of a trillion dollars in a year, almost entirely using infrastructure that still averages 6.5% in transfer costs.

The Aggregator makes those costs flat, predictable, and low enough to make stablecoin-based remittance competitive with incumbents in the real world.

Businesses need predictability to prefer stablecoins to traditional payment routes. Predictability not just in calculating the cost of making a payment, but also in knowing if the network is going to be as available as the traditional routes.

Stable’s guaranteed blockspace feature gives enterprises the reassurance that general-purpose chains can never provide. The feature reserves a fixed portion of every block for institutional and high-volume users, regardless of what else is happening on the chain.

The institutional support is evident from the fact that Stable has attracted backers, like Franklin Templeton, one of the largest asset managers. When a fund house that manages over $1.6 trillion is on the cap table, it speaks to their conviction in Stable’s direction.

Franklin Templeton’s involvement also includes a live $100 million tokenised U.S. Treasury position on the chain, through a consortium that includes Wellington Management and Standard Chartered.

This bet has a far-reaching impact.

Last month, we wrote about how when U.S. Treasuries move on-chain, the instruments built on top of them follow. “Lending protocols gain access to higher-quality collateral. Stablecoins get anchored to verifiable on-chain reserves rather than off-chain attestations.”

Franklin Templeton’s position on Stable shows that institutions that once managed only the assets backing stablecoins (tokenised treasury funds) are now interested in owning a share of the infrastructure that powers them.

But there are things Stable will have to watch out for.

A chain whose gas, treasury, and entire economic logic runs on USDT inherits every regulatory problem USDT carries. Tether had to shut its euro-based stablecoin, EURT, because it was not MiCA-compliant. Post-GENIUS Act, US-regulated entities face compliance questions building on a stablecoin sitting outside the federal regulatory perimeter.

Also, businesses won’t use stablecoins for payroll and vendor settlements if they require businesses to share sensitive information on general-purpose blockchains.

Stable’s privacy layer offers to solve this using zero-knowledge (ZK) cryptography, which masks the transfer value and discloses only the sender and receiver addresses. But that promise is still a work in progress.

If Stable is to become the default choice for businesses to move money, it will have to move quickly on its privacy promise.

What This Changes

People often think the digital dollar story is about crypto. I think the story is more about financial inclusion - about how one can access money as they navigate geopolitics and the economy.

Today, Tether holds over $120 billion in U.S. Treasury bills as a reserve asset, more than what most sovereign nations hold. Over half a billion people across the world’s fastest-growing economies choose to hold stablecoins because of the ease with which they can hold and transact them. Not because they are trending and part of the crypto narrative.

Such is the scale of financial inclusion USDT has enabled.

The world kept using traditional infrastructure for decades because it had no other option. Now, we see them opting to transact using stablecoins despite broken infrastructure. It tells us a thing or two about users’ belief in the digital dollar. And now, the infrastructure is catching up to the demands of the users.

There are many builders in this space trying to bridge the gap. They all have unique economic models. Stable might not be the best-funded chain, or the most technically ambitious one. But it has definitely adopted a smart approach by taking its product where users already are: to USDT. Over half a billion of them adopted the product even when it moved money over broken infrastructure.

Stable does have questions to answer and intense competitors to see off. But it’s on the right direction and counts an envious set of financial giants as its ecosystem partners.

What will guarantee success? Nobody knows for sure, but I’ll try anyway. It’s really marketing 101.

Stable needs to offer people a way to move their money without worrying about when the plumbing beneath it will crumble or which currency to hold beyond stablecoin to pay fees. People care most about the comfort of moving money. Crypto, stablecoins or fiat - it doesn’t matter. What matters, though, is how smooth that journey is.

Stable is aspiring to transform that journey into a comfortable one. Just comfortable enough to make payments an invisible, forgettable experience. Because moving money isn’t a skill to master.

Two decades ago, I used to play an action game where you could accumulate coins and face a choice: spend a few coins on a guaranteed common skin or gamble everything on a randomised chest where you’d probably get nothing but a chance at an exclusive skin. I picked the chest. Almost every time. I don’t remember ever hitting a jackpot. And, no, I wasn’t bad at math. I knew the odds were against me. But there was a human behavioural element at play there. The three seconds before the chest revealed if I’d won, the wheel would spin, and the animation built anticipation. That was it. That’s what people who picked the chest did it for. The adrenaline lasted all of three seconds. Game studios built a $20 billion annual economy on randomised rewards and loot boxes.

You think it is irrational? We see a similar human behaviour, albeit from the other side, in finance.

People happily pay a recurring sum of money to avoid a tiny chance of catastrophic loss and call it insurance. We accept a small, guaranteed cost to immunise ourselves against a low-probability disaster. Finance has built an industry worth over a trillion dollars around this fear.

On the flip side, the lottery market is estimated at over $370 billion.

What’s common in all such systems is that they take something away from the player. We call it the ‘sunk cost’ in economics. The game takes away your coins. The lottery contest takes away your ticket price. The insurance system takes away your premium. The expected value of each of these contracts is always negative.

What if it wasn’t?

What if you could experience the excitement and anticipation of winning big, without ever losing your principal amount? What if what was being redistributed as a “reward” is not the cumulative sunk costs of the participants but just the interest earned on your deposits?

Someone ran this experiment for 70 years, but only in one country. Today, someone else has replicated this, but at scale and accessible worldwide.

The 70-Year Proof

In 1956, Harold Macmillan, then Chancellor of the Exchequer, introduced Premium Bonds to the United Kingdom. Rather than distributing interest among depositors in a linear fashion, the government pooled all deposit yields and redistributed them as randomised prizes.

Your principal stayed intact, fully backed by the Treasury.

Today, about 24 million people have invested over £240 billion in Premium Bonds (PBs). That’s over a third of the UK population. Electronic Random Number Indicator Equipment (ERNIE), the random number generator, selects winners and distributes millions of prizes every month, ranging from £25 to a million-pound jackpot.

From a rational perspective, most holders would earn more in a savings account or an index fund. Yet, PBs survived because they targeted the human behaviour that reveals how people feel about saving with a remote chance of earning a jackpot return, rather than a fixed, modest interest income. These bonds made holding money exciting and anticipatory rather than passive and boring.

This may not materialise into winnings for short-term investors, but people believed they stood a chance of hitting the jackpot if they held their investment for long enough. A classic belief that we all carry when we play any game of dice. You expect to hit a six if you keep rolling the dice long enough.

Though the probability of winning a jackpot doesn’t favour the investor from an economic standpoint, the realisation of not risking capital while standing a chance of winning an outsized prize made psychological sense. That’s what helped Premium Bonds survive every macroeconomic crest and trough the UK experienced over the last 70 years, including interest rate cycles, inflation spikes, financial crises, the rise of the internet, and generational turnover. Nothing came close to threatening the product.

The model was effective, yet it was confined to the UK. Many others tried to emulate the strategy. The U.S. experimented with it through credit unions in the early 2010s, but couldn’t scale it to the same level as PBs.

Here, the reasons were structural and had nothing to do with psychology. The strategy needed a government issuer, a legal framework that exempts the product from gambling regulations, and the ability to operate without intermediaries extracting value along the journey.

Some found a way around this.

Yotta, a U.S. fintech company founded in 2019, came close to replicating the model. It offered a savings account where interest was distributed as lottery-style prizes. People lapped up the product. There was no doubt about the product-market fit. Demand rose.

But Yotta faced another, bigger problem. It was built on traditional financial infrastructure by relying on partner banks, middleware providers such as Synapse, and reconciliation layers. Traditional banking infrastructure is built for linear, predictable and recurring interest payments. PBs needed a specialised financial infrastructure that left no room for fragmented custody and intermediary fees. So, when Synapse collapsed in 2024, over 100,000 Americans lost access to over $265 million in funds.

Yotta managed to prove the thesis right, but the infrastructure pulled it down.

Enter Blockchain

Layer3, an on-chain finance platform, is the latest one to double down on this thesis. Its team built Ample, a platform that takes the Premium Bonds model and backs it with on-chain infrastructure.

The same model that accepts deposits, pools yield, distributes it as randomised prizes and preserves principal; but on blockchain this time.

You can connect your wallet, deposit USDC into the protocol and get started.

Ample then supplies the assets to on-chain lending markets to earn yield. Instead of distributing yield proportionally, the app aggregates it into a prize pool and distributes it randomly at weekly intervals to selected participants. These winners are selected using verifiable randomness encoded in smart contracts.

Your principal stays in the smart contract, under your ownership and doesn’t transfer to any intermediary institution. What’s better? The prize logic, unlike in traditional setups, is transparent and auditable. Fees are explicit and programmatic.

There are no partner banks holding deposits and no Synapse-style reconciliation layer.

This is the single biggest reason why it looks more promising than the previous models. Ample removes the entire opacity and middleware stack that killed Yotta. All components of the model, including the deposit, yield, prize logic, and payout, live in the same observable on-chain system.

The Engagement Loop

Although the winners are ultimately selected at random, factors such as how long they have been depositing, whether they have a continuous deposit streak, and whether they are saving with multiple people influence their ticket multiplier by a small percentage.

Ample layers the core mechanism with engagement elements that feed into each other. The ‘Tickets’ feature awards the user tickets proportionate to their deposit size. The more tickets you hold, the likelier you are to win a payout. ‘Streaks’ rewards users for depositing consistently every week with ticket multipliers.

It even rewards users with more boosts to their chances of winning a payout when they form a team and bring their connections on board.

The more members you bring to the platform and the higher the value of collective deposits the team makes, the bigger the boost you earn.

The B2B Growth Card

Ample’s scope for growth is tied to the size of the prize pools. Larger pools will sustain user excitement, something that is fundamental to the entire model. Currently, Ample has only scratched the surface. Its potential will come alive when the prizes are big enough to make someone’s week.

What excites me about Ample is that it doesn’t limit itself to being a consumer-facing app. It wants to position the product as a savings infrastructure on top of existing platforms. Any wallet or fintech app where users hold idle asset balances should be able to plug into Ample and offer prize-linked savings under the hood without building any of the yield aggregation, randomness, or payout logic themselves, Zeel Patel, Ample Product Lead, tells me.

Zeel expects Ample to replicate, for prize-linked savings, what Privy did by integrating with Aave on Arbitrum, giving every wallet built on top of it access to that yield source. Early explorations and discussions are underway with wallets and exchanges.

Even if one major wallet embeds Ample, the depositor base could expand by orders of magnitude, blowing up the prize pool and turning the draw exciting for the users. That’s what will set the flywheel started.

Although the thesis is proven, there are a few things that could go wrong.

Every consumer application faces initial problems with distribution, discovery, and retention; Ample is no different. The product needs wallets and fintechs to embed it for the behavioural thesis to work at scale. Ample’s advantage here is that the team isn’t starting cold. Its team has experience building Layer3, the platform that has already scaled to millions of users in the consumer space, and those distribution muscles carry over.

Another nuance here is that this is a new concept for most users. But the fact that the product is psychology-driven and not rate-driven will give Ample an edge over other products that are overly dependent on rate cycles. The behavioural shift has already started playing out.

One beta user deposited $10, won over $300, and came back with $2,000. The team has seen this trend pick up. But it means every new user has to be converted through experience, which could be a harder acquisition path, but not impossible. This is where the social engagement layer could exhibit network effects and drive user adoption.

What Comes Next

The stablecoin supply has touched $300 billion. With a growing population wanting to hold digital dollars at scale, they will need somewhere productive to put all that new money. Some place that doesn’t eat into the purchasing power of these dollars. With Aave, Euler and Morpho holding billions in deposits and years of operational history, the narrative has aligned in favour of stablecoin usage and fintech products built on blockchain infrastructure.

This could give Ample a conducive space for mass adoption if it can materialise its integrations across major platforms that hold stablecoin balances.

But there’s something more interesting that makes me feel optimistic about what lies ahead for Ample.

The Ample team sees a future in which tokenisation across treasuries, gold, and equities expands the class of assets that prize-linked savings can tap into. If prize-linked savings works for USDC, there is no reason it can’t work for tokenised gold, treasuries or any other yield-bearing asset in tokenised form.

In the long-term, Ample expects to route credit and spending through the same engagement structure. If it can pull that off, it will have delivered a globally scaled-up and universally auditable version of Premium Bonds, where the anticipation of a reward can exist inside a product, the principal is preserved, and the expected value never turns negative.

Every transaction. Every wallet balance. Every interaction with every contract. All of it permanent, public, searchable forever. We called it “trustless” because you didn’t have to trust anyone, and you could verify everything yourself.

Then we wondered why no one wanted to build real businesses on blockchain.

Turns out, transparency is only valuable when it reveals things that should be shown. Your medical records shouldn’t be transparent. Your salary shouldn’t be transparent. Your supplier contracts shouldn’t be transparent. Your credit history, your home address, your purchase history, and your political donations none of these benefit from radical transparency.

We built a system that forces you to choose: either expose everything to use blockchain, or give up blockchain entirely and go back to traditional databases with traditional intermediaries.

The first generation of blockchains prioritised transparency over privacy and marketed it as a feature. The second generation tried privacy coins, and regulators called them suspicious. Both approaches failed to reach the people who actually need digital infrastructure: businesses with sensitive data, individuals with private information, and developers building apps that must comply with GDPR.

Midnight argues the choice itself is wrong. The question isn’t “privacy or transparency?” The question is “who decides what gets revealed, and when?”

So What is Midnight?

Midnight is a privacy-focused blockchain that lets you prove things without revealing them.

Think of it like showing your driver’s license at a bar. The bouncer needs to know you’re over 21. They don’t need your address, your height, your organ donor status, or your real birthday. But traditional blockchain is like photocopying your entire license and posting it on the bar’s wall permanently.

Explore Midnight

Midnight uses zero-knowledge proofs to let you share just what’s necessary. Prove you’re over 21 without revealing you’re 23. Prove you have enough money without showing your bank balance. Prove you’re eligible without exposing your identity.

The network already launched on mainnet in January 2025. It’s live, processing transactions, and connected to Cardano as a partner chain. Over 800,000 users claimed NIGHT tokens during the Glacier Drop distribution. This isn’t a testnet or a whitepaper promise.

Most privacy coins go full blackout. Every transaction is hidden from everyone, including regulators. That’s why exchanges delist them, and banks won’t touch them. They chose privacy over legitimacy.

Public chains do the opposite. Ethereum and most Layer 1s expose everything to meet compliance requirements. Every DApp leaks user data by design. Every transaction reveals your wallet history to anyone with block explorer.

Both approaches fail in practice. Privacy coins can’t scale to real business. Public chains can’t handle sensitive data.

Midnight calls this the “privacy paradox” and built around it instead of picking a side.

How it Works

Midnight runs on zero-knowledge proofs (ZK-SNARKs specifically), but you don’t need to understand the cryptography to use it. The network handles three types of operations:

Public stuff everyone can see: Token transfers, governance votes, final settlement. This lives on-chain permanently and anyone can verify it.

Private stuff only you control: Personal data, business logic, sensitive information. This stays on your device and never touches the blockchain.

Proofs that connect them: When you need to prove something about your private data, Midnight generates a cryptographic proof. The network can verify the proof is valid without seeing the underlying information.

For example, a healthcare app can prove a patient consented to treatment without revealing their medical records. A financial app can prove you meet credit requirements without exposing your income. A supply chain can prove goods came from verified sources without revealing supplier contracts.

The key is “rational privacy”. You choose what to reveal and when. Not everything private, not everything public, but exactly what each situation requires.

Midnight uses two tokens that work together: NIGHT and DUST.

NIGHT is the main token. Fixed supply of 24 billion. You hold it, you stake it for governance, and block producers earn it as rewards. It’s listed on major exchanges, fully transferable, works like a normal crypto asset.

DUST is different. It’s not a token; it’s a renewable resource that NIGHT generates.

Here’s how it works:

You hold 1,000 NIGHT tokens. Those tokens automatically generate DUST over time into a designated address. The DUST caps at a maximum amount proportional to your NIGHT balance. When you execute transactions on Midnight (smart contract calls, transfers, DApp interactions), you spend DUST as the fee.

DUST is consumed when used and isn’t transferable. You can’t buy it, sell it, or send it to someone else. It just powers your network activity.

This separation solves several problems:

Predictable costs: Transaction fees don’t spike when NIGHT price goes up. You generate DUST at a fixed rate based on how much NIGHT you hold. Businesses can budget operational costs without worrying about token volatility.

Privacy by default: DUST is shielded, meaning DUST transactions don’t expose metadata. No one can see your transaction history, wallet balance, or activity patterns the way they can on Ethereum.

No gas wars: Since DUST isn’t transferable, you can’t tip miners to prioritise your transaction. The network uses dynamic pricing to manage congestion, but you can’t buy your way to the front of the line.

Fair access: DApp operators can sponsor user transactions by generating DUST for their users. This means people can use Midnight apps without owning any crypto. The blockchain layer becomes invisible.

The Three Layers of Midnight

Midnight is three integrated systems:

Midnight Network (the blockchain): Layer 1 blockchain secured initially by trusted nodes, transitioning to Cardano stake pool operators. Uses Substrate framework with GRANDPA finality and AURA block production. Processes private transactions using zero-knowledge proofs.

Compact (the programming language): TypeScript-based smart contract language designed for privacy. Developers write contracts that specify what’s public (visible on-chain) and what’s private (stays local). The Compact compiler generates the ZK circuits automatically. You don’t need to be a cryptographer to build privacy-preserving apps.

Lace Wallet (the interface): Browser extension wallet that manages NIGHT tokens, DUST generation, and private state. Users can interact with Midnight DApps without understanding the technical complexity. The wallet handles proof generation, transaction signing, and private data storage.

Together, these make privacy accessible. Most ZK systems require specialized knowledge to use. Midnight abstracts the complexity so regular developers and users can benefit from privacy without expertise.

Who’s Actually Using This?

The network launched in January 2025 and is early, but the initial distribution shows real traction:

The Glacier Drop (token distribution) had over 800,000 participants claim NIGHT across eight blockchain ecosystems: Cardano, Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRPL, BNB Chain, Avalanche, and Brave.

Distribution was designed to be broad. 50% of supply allocated to Cardano holders, 20% to Bitcoin holders, the rest split across other networks based on token holdings. No VC rounds, no private sales, no insider allocations. The entire initial supply went to community claims.

Major exchanges support NIGHT: Kraken, OKX, Bitpanda, HTX. Users can claim tokens directly through exchange integrations or via the NIGHT Claim Portal website.

Block production is currently run by trusted validators but transitioning to Cardano stake pool operators. SPOs can register to produce Midnight blocks and earn NIGHT rewards without affecting their Cardano operations. They run both roles simultaneously.

The Bigger Picture

Most blockchains choose a side: privacy coins go full blackout and get delisted, public chains expose everything and can’t handle sensitive data.

Midnight takes a different approach. Privacy is programmable, not binary. Developers choose what to reveal and when. Users control their own disclosure. Regulators can verify compliance without accessing raw data.

If that actually works in practice, it opens blockchain to industries that currently can’t touch public chains. Healthcare apps that protect patient privacy while proving treatment eligibility. Financial services that verify creditworthiness without exposing income. Supply chains that prove provenance without revealing supplier contracts. Digital identities that prove attributes without unnecessary disclosure.

The technical foundations are solid. ZK-SNARKs for proofs, a compact language for developer accessibility, a dual-token model for cost predictability, and a Cardano partnership for bootstrap security. The mainnet is live and processing transactions.

The hard part is everything else: building the ecosystem, proving the use cases, achieving adoption, navigating regulation, and demonstrating that “rational privacy” solves real problems better than existing alternatives.

Single-chain deployment creates dependency on Arbitrum. No multi-chain redundancy yet. If Arbitrum has issues, Ostium goes down with it. High leverage attracts gamblers who often lose. 200x leverage is marketed as a feature, but it’s also how retail traders blow up accounts. The casino element exists whether they acknowledge it or not.

Regulatory uncertainty around synthetic RWAs. Nobody knows how regulators will treat on-chain perpetual contracts for traditional securities. The legal framework is undefined, which creates long-term risk.

Execution depth varies significantly by position size. For trades under $100K, Ostium often executes at zero spread. But a $5 million gold position will face 0.25-0.50% slippage, and $5 million in BTC could run 0.50-1.00%. Compare that to Hyperliquid’s 0.15-0.25% on similar-sized BTC trades. The tradeoff: Ostium is the only decentralised venue where you can trade RWAs at an institutional scale, even if crypto execution isn’t as tight as specialised platforms.

What This Means If It Scales

The roadmap includes a mobile app launch, which could significantly expand the addressable market beyond desktop traders. Additional asset classes are planned, including bonds and more individual equities.

When you wire money internationally, it doesn’t actually move. Not in the traditional sense. Instead, it’s a multi-day game of telephone between correspondent banks, each maintaining their own separate ledger, each adding their own fees, each introducing their own delays. Your money sits in limbo while SWIFT messages ping back and forth, while compliance officers manually check sanctions lists, while settlement systems that were built in the 1970s slowly reconcile who owes what to whom.

This is how the system was designed. Every bank runs its own database. Every transaction between banks requires reconciliation. Every cross-border payment involves multiple intermediaries because banks in different countries can’t see each other’s ledgers. The infrastructure works, technically. It’s just incredibly, expensively, and dangerously slow.

The blockchain pitch has always been - we can fix this. One shared ledger. Instant settlement. No intermediaries. Just put everything on Ethereum and watch the friction disappear.

Except banks can’t do that. They can’t put customer deposits on a public blockchain where anyone can see transaction amounts. They can’t route payments through a network where a sanctioned wallet might be the next validator. They can’t operate on infrastructure where gas fees swing wildly based on NFT mania or DeFi liquidation cascades. They can’t explain to regulators why they’re trusting billions of dollars to a system secured by pseudonymous validators in unknown jurisdictions.

So we’ve spent a decade in a stalemate. Blockchain developers built incredible technology that banks won’t touch. Banks ran proof-of-concept pilots on private blockchains that never connected to anything. The $100 trillion sitting in traditional finance stayed trapped in the old system, while liquidity in DeFi remained siloed in its own ecosystem.

When Privacy Isn’t Optional

The core problem isn’t technical. Blockchains work. The problem is that what makes a blockchain useful for DeFi (transparency, permissionlessness, shared state) is exactly what makes it unusable for banks.

Put differently, a bank can’t operate on Ethereum mainnet for the same reason you wouldn’t conduct surgery in a public park. It’s not that the park is badly designed. It’s that r surgery requires conditions like “sterile environment,” “privacy,” and “controlled access,” none of which a park provides.

Banks have similar non-negotiable requirements. When JPMorgan settles a $500 million bond trade with Goldman Sachs, they can’t broadcast the transaction details to the entire world. When Citibank moves dollars for a corporate client, they can’t reveal the client’s cash position to competitors. When a central bank pilots a digital currency, it absolutely cannot expose monetary policy operations or systemic liquidity flows to public inspection.

This isn’t about banks being old-fashioned or paranoid. This is about the law. Bank Secrecy Act. GDPR. Sanctions compliance. Securities regulations. The entire regulatory framework of modern finance assumes that sensitive information remains private.

Previous attempts to solve this fell into two camps, both failures. The first camp tried to build bank-specific blockchains: Hyperledger, R3 Corda, JP Morgan’s Quorum. These systems gave banks the privacy they needed but they recreated the original problem, which is isolated databases that don’t communicate with each other. You’d end up with thousands of private chains, each a walled garden, each requiring custom integration, each missing the whole point of blockchain’s shared state.

The second camp tried to bolt privacy onto public chains after the fact: Tornado Cash. Aztec. Secret Network. These had the opposite problem, they connected to shared liquidity, but the privacy mechanisms were add-ons, afterthoughts, often incomplete or legally suspect. Regulators banned Tornado Cash. Institutions stayed away.

Rayls’ answer is architecturally different. It starts with privacy as the foundation, then connects to public markets as the final step.

What Is Rayls?

Rayls is a blockchain ecosystem purpose-built for financial institutions to operate on-chain while maintaining the privacy, compliance, and control they legally require.

A three-layer system:

Layer 1 - Privacy Nodes: Each bank gets its own private blockchain running inside their infrastructure. They tokenise assets, manage customer accounts, and handle internal operations exactly like they do today, except everything’s programmable and on-chain. Nobody outside the bank sees this data.

Layer 2 - Private Networks: Multiple banks connect their Privacy Nodes into permissioned networks for interbank transactions. Ten banks want to settle payments among themselves? They form a private consortium where only members can see activity, but they all share one ledger for instant settlement.

Layer 3 - Public Chain: The Rayls public blockchain connects everything to the broader DeFi ecosystem. When institutions want to tap global liquidity, issue assets to retail investors, or access DeFi protocols, they bridge through here. But unlike Ethereum, every participant on Rayls must pass KYC verification.

All three layers run on EVM, so standard Ethereum tools and smart contracts just work. But the architecture is designed specifically for institutions rather than being a public chain trying to bolt on compliance afterward.

For banks: You can tokenise everything. Customer deposits become programmable tokens. Bonds, loans, receivables, all on-chain, instantly transferable, while maintaining complete privacy from competitors and full regulatory compliance.

For DeFi users and protocols: Institutional money has mostly stayed on the sidelines because public chains can’t meet compliance requirements. Rayls changes that. Banks bringing tokenised treasuries, corporate bonds, and yield-bearing assets on-chain means DeFi users can finally access regulated, lower-risk instruments that have never been available globally.

The use cases are already live:

Núclea (Brazil’s largest financial market infrastructure) is using Rayls to tokenise commercial receivables, with over 10,000 assets registered weekly. These are real invoices from real businesses, now tradeable on-chain with complete fraud prevention because ownership is immutably recorded.

Central Bank of Brazil selected Rayls for their CBDC pilot program (DREX). Sixteen of Brazil’s largest banks are using Rayls to test digital currency settlement with privacy intact. When Bank A trades with Bank B, other banks in the network can’t see the transaction details, but the central bank maintains full oversight.

Cielo (largest payment acquirer in Latin America) is tokenising merchant settlements. Instead of waiting days for card payments to clear, merchants get instant tokenised value they can use immediately or trade for liquidity.

The Quantum-Safe Privacy Layer

Most discussions about blockchain privacy focus on hiding transaction amounts or wallet addresses. Rayls goes several layers deeper with something called Enygma, which is a privacy protocol designed specifically for institutional requirements.

Enygma combines zero-knowledge proofs with homomorphic encryption, which means a smart contract can verify that Bank A has sufficient funds to make a payment without knowing Bank A’s total balance. A regulator can audit whether transactions comply with AML rules without seeing individual customer details.

Here’s the detail that reveals how seriously Rayls is thinking about institutional timelines - Enygma is quantum-resistant. Most blockchains use elliptic curve cryptography, which works great until quantum computers become powerful enough to break it. For a bank issuing a 30-year bond, this matters. The bond’s terms can be public, but the ownership records, trading history, and settlement details need to stay confidential for decades. You can’t tokenize long-duration assets on infrastructure where a future quantum computer could expose who bought what, when, and for how much.

The protocol also includes selective disclosure, which solves a problem that’s killed previous privacy solutions. With Tornado Cash, transactions were completely opaque. With public Ethereum, transactions are completely transparent. Banks need something in between. Enygma lets institutions generate view keys that allow specific parties (auditors, regulators, counterparties) to view transaction details without breaking privacy for everyone else.

The Token Economics

Most utility tokens introduce volatility that makes them unusable for enterprises. If Ethereum gas costs $5 today and $50 tomorrow due to a DeFi liquidation cascade, you can’t run predictable operations on top of it.

Rayls solves this with a dual-token system. Users pay transaction fees in USDr, which is pegged to the dollar. A transaction costs $0.01, not “0.01 RLS” where RLS might be worth $0.01 today and $0.03 tomorrow. This provides institutions with the cost predictability they need.

Behind the scenes, USDr payments are converted into RLS, the native token. The protocol buys RLS on the open market with collected fees, then burns 50% immediately. The remaining 50% goes to validators. Every transaction creates buy pressure for RLS while reducing the total supply. More usage equals more demand plus less supply.

RLS has a fixed supply of 10 billion tokens. No new tokens can be minted. As transaction volume scales, the burn accelerates. Even Privacy Node transactions, though “gasless” from the institution’s perspective, must be settled in RLS on the public chain. Every bank running a Privacy Node is effectively a buyer of RLS.

From an investor’s perspective, this creates an interesting asymmetry. You’re not just betting on DeFi users adopting another Layer 1. You’re betting on banks adopting private blockchain infrastructure and connecting it to public markets. The more institutional adoption happens behind closed doors, the more it benefits public token holders.

Why This Might Actually Work

Enterprise blockchain has been “coming next year” for a decade. Most pilots went nowhere. Rayls has a few things working in its favor that previous attempts didn’t.

First, it’s already in production with Núclea, Animoca Brands and Cielo, partnering with.

Second, the timing is better. BlackRock’s BUIDL fund has scaled to over $1 billion. The tokenised fund market has quadrupled in the past year to over $7 billion. Major institutions are asking which infrastructure to use.

Third, the regulatory environment is shifting. The US just legalised stablecoins through the GENIUS Act. The EU is implementing MiCA. Central banks in Brazil, Singapore, and Switzerland are actively piloting CBDCs. Rayls was designed to fit inside this emerging regulatory framework from day one.

Fourth, the team isn’t crypto-native founders trying to understand banking. It’s bank executives who learned blockchain. The CEO spent 25 years at BTG Pactual, Latin America’s largest investment bank. They built Rayls to pass institutional procurement, not to win hackathons.

The skeptical read is that this is still trying to bridge two incompatible worlds. That banks will never fully embrace public blockchains no matter how much privacy you add. That regulatory capture will neuter anything interesting about the technology.

For thousands of years, this story required intermediaries to verify it. Banks kept ledgers. Governments minted coins. Accountants reconciled books. The entire apparatus of modern finance exists because we needed trusted third parties to say “Yes, this transaction happened, and here’s the proof.”

The result is a payment that looks and feels like a normal web transaction, but with all the transparency and verifiability of blockchain.

There’s also a “nerd corner” for those who care: x402b extends the historic HTTP 402 “Payment Required” standard (recently revived by Coinbase) with EIP-3009-style transfer authorisation. The facilitator model is similar to meta-transaction systems in other gasless protocols, but it’s specifically optimised for BNB Chain and tightly integrated with compliance tooling.

It’s not a conspiracy. It’s just how value concentration works. When something becomes essential to economic output, ownership of that resource becomes the highest-leverage position you can hold.

So here’s the question. What’s the scarcest productive resource of our age?

It’s not data. Data is abundant. It’s not even AI models themselves, as those can be replicated, fine-tuned, or forked.

It’s compute.

The GPUs that train and run every AI system you interact with are the bottleneck. NVIDIA can’t manufacture them fast enough. Hyperscalers are spending hundreds of billions trying to secure supply. OpenAI’s Stargate project alone is committing $500 billion to build out AI compute infrastructure.

Compute is the new oil. The new farmland. The new railroad.

But unlike oil or real estate, there’s been no way for regular people to own a piece of this resource and earn from its productivity. You can buy NVIDIA stock, sure. But that’s buying a company with a dozen business lines and a valuation that already prices in decades of growth. You can’t buy a fractional share of an H100 and collect rent on the compute cycles.

The Problem With Most Crypto Yield

Before we get into GAIB, let’s talk about why this matters.

If you’ve spent any time in DeFi, you know the dirty secret: most yield is fake.

You stake a token, you earn rewards, and those rewards come from… token emissions. The protocol prints new tokens, gives them to you, and calls it APY. But inflation isn’t yield. If the token supply doubles and your bag doubles, you haven’t actually gained anything. You’ve just held your position against dilution.

The other common source is circular liquidity. You deposit funds, someone borrows them, they deposit elsewhere, and someone else borrows. It works until there’s a bank run, and then you’re stuck holding an unbacked receipt token, wondering where your money went.

Vitalik Buterin himself has addressed this problem. He’s said that for DeFi to mature, yields need to come from “something external,” something rooted in real economic activity outside the crypto bubble.

It’s similar to how banks lend depositor funds to businesses that generate real value.

That’s what makes GAIB interesting. They’re not printing tokens and calling it yield. They’re financing physical AI infrastructure, collecting revenue from compute operations, and passing that revenue to token holders.

What GAIB Actually Does

GAIB calls itself the “economic layer for AI infrastructure.” Let’s break down what it actually means.

Here’s the business model:

Step 1: Cloud companies need GPUs

Running AI workloads requires serious hardware. A single NVIDIA H100 costs upwards of $30,000. Outfitting a data center can run into hundreds of millions. Cloud providers and data centers need capital to acquire these assets, and traditional bank financing is slow, expensive, and often unavailable for this asset class.

Step 2: GAIB provides financing

GAIB steps in with capital. They structure deals with cloud companies (most of which are NVIDIA Cloud Partners), secured by the physical GPUs and the revenue contracts those GPUs generate. The deals are over-collateralised at 1.3x to 1.5x, meaning there’s a buffer if something goes wrong.

Step 3: GPUs generate revenue

Cloud companies deploy the GPUs, rent them to AI companies, and generate revenue. These aren’t speculative bets. Most deals involve multi-year contracts with paying customers. The typical payback period for GPU investments is 12-18 months, which translates to annualised returns of 50-100% on the underlying hardware.

Step 4: Revenue flows to token holders

That revenue flows back into GAIB’s protocol and gets distributed to holders of their yield-bearing token (sAID). No token emissions, no circular liquidity. Just cash flow from actual economic activity.

They’ve already executed around $50 million in tokenised GPU deals, including a notable $30 million transaction with SIAM AI, Thailand’s first sovereign AI cloud and an NVIDIA Preferred Partner. They’re now expanding into robotics, partnering with Primech (Nasdaq: PMEC) to tokenise cleaning robots under a Robot-as-a-Service model.

The Products: AID and sAID

GAIB has two core products you need to understand:

AID (AI Dollar)

AID is a synthetic dollar pegged to $1 and fully backed by US Treasuries and stable assets. You can think of it as your entry ticket into the GAIB ecosystem.

You can mint AID by depositing USDC or USDT. You can swap it on DEXs or use it for liquidity provision (LP). On its own, AID doesn’t generate yield, but it’s designed to be the base currency for everything GAIB does.

As of November 21st, AID is redeemable 1:1 for USDC on Ethereum. No lockups, no funny business. You can withdraw your funds whenever you wish.

sAID (Staked AID)

This is where the yield lives.

When you stake AID, you receive sAID, a liquid staking token that represents your share of GAIB’s portfolio of AI infrastructure financing deals. As those deals generate revenue, the value of sAID relative to AID increases. No manual claiming, no compounding. You just hold sAID and watch the exchange rate tick up over time.

The underlying portfolio consists of:

• 30% US Treasury bills (for liquidity and stability)

• 70% deployed into GPU and robotics financing deals

The sAID vault follows the ERC-4626 standard, so it’s fully composable with other DeFi protocols. You can use it on Pendle to split into principal and yield tokens. You can supply it to Morpho as collateral. The integrations are already live.

If you want to exit, you can either sell sAID on secondary markets (when those pools deepen) or unstake through GAIB’s withdrawal manager with a 30-day cooldown period.

Why This Is Different From Other RWA Projects

Real-world asset tokenisation isn’t new. You’ve probably seen projects tokenising treasuries, real estate, private credit. So, what makes GAIB stand out?

1. They’re Tokenising a Growing Asset Class

Most RWA projects tokenise stable, mature asset classes. That’s fine, but the returns reflect that stability. GAIB is tokenising AI infrastructure, which is one of the fastest-growing sectors in the global economy. The demand for compute is exponential. Every new foundation model, every new AI startup, every enterprise AI deployment needs more GPUs.

2. The Team Operates in the Industry

GAIB’s co-founder Alex runs GMI Cloud, an actual Nvidia Cloud Partner. Co-founder Kony comes from venture capital and traditional finance. They’re not tokenising GPUs from the outside looking in. They have direct relationships with cloud providers across Asia, North America, and Europe. Their current pipeline exceeds $2.5 billion in potential deals.

3. The Structure Is Conservative

They require over-collateralisation on every deal. They only work with cloud companies that have signed customers and proven payment histories. If a borrower defaults, GAIB can either liquidate the hardware on secondary markets or continue operating the GPUs through partner data centres.

4. They’re Expanding to Robotics

The same model that works for GPUs works for any physical asset with recurring revenue. GAIB has already announced partnerships to tokenise robots, specifically service robots operating under Robot-as-a-Service models. If this scales, sAID becomes exposed to a diversified portfolio of AI infrastructure, not just compute.

The $GAIB Token

GAIB is launching its native token with a total supply of 1 billion. Here’s the allocation:

• 40% Community (airdrops, staking rewards, ecosystem incentives)

• 20.7% Core contributors

• 19.8% Early backers

• 19.5% Ecosystem and growth

That 40% community allocation is notably higher than most projects. The token has actual utility beyond governance: you stake $GAIB to secure the validator network that attests to the real-world status of tokenised assets. Validators confirm that the GPUs exist, are operational, and are generating the claimed revenue. If they misbehave, they get slashed.

The economic model is designed to be non-inflationary in the long-term. Early emissions bootstrap participation, but over time rewards come from actual protocol revenue rather than token printing.

Buying NVIDIA stock gives you a company with multiple business lines and a P/E ratio that prices in decades of growth. GAIB gives you more direct exposure to the economics of compute itself.

RWA enthusiasts

This is one of the more novel applications of real-world asset tokenisation. Instead of tokenising something static like a building, they’re tokenising productive infrastructure that generates ongoing cash flow.

DeFi natives looking for composability

sAID is already integrated with Pendle for yield tokenisation and Morpho for lending. You can build strategies on top of it, not just hold it.

Sam Altman likes to say that “compute will be the currency of the future.”

If that’s true, someone needs to build the financial infrastructure around it. Markets, yield products, liquidity layers. The same way financial innovation unlocked the value of oil in the 19th century, something similar needs to happen for AI infrastructure.

GAIB is one of the first serious attempts at this. They’re building a full economic layer: synthetic dollars, yield-bearing vaults, validator networks, and expanding asset classes.

What I find interesting about GAIB is what it says about both industries. AI infrastructure is becoming one of the most capital-intensive sectors in the world, with Big Tech planning hundreds of billions in data centre spending. That capital has to come from somewhere. Meanwhile, crypto has searched for years for “real yield,” ways to connect on-chain liquidity to actual economic production. GPU financing is a weirdly perfect fit.

GAIB’s bet is that they can build the rails for this connection. Maybe it works and they become the BlackRock of AI infrastructure financing. Maybe the sector proves more complicated than expected. Maybe a competitor eats their lunch. But the thesis, that AI infrastructure needs new financing mechanisms and crypto can provide them, seems right.

Is it a guaranteed win? No. Nothing is. But if you believe AI compute demand will keep growing (and every signal suggests it will), then protocols that can capture and distribute that value are worth watching.

At minimum, it’s a more interesting yield source than another rebase token.

This is Allo.xyz. They’ve tokenised $2.4 billion in real-world assets, raised over $100 million (including a Bitcoin-backed credit facility, which is a fun phrase), and built what they’re calling “the world’s first exchange for tokenised stocks with 24/7 trading.” They have about 60,000 users, partnerships with Binance ecosystem players, and a token called RWA that you can use for... well, we’ll get to that.

What Allo Actually Does

Allo is a Real-World Asset (RWA) tokenisation platform built on the BNB Chain. It takes traditional financial assets, particularly stocks, and creates blockchain-based versions that can be traded around the clock.

Allo holds real stocks in secure custody through regulated partners. For every real share held, the platform mints a corresponding token on the blockchain. For example, if you buy one aTSLA token, that represents one actual Tesla share sitting in custody. If you buy 0.5 aAAPL, that’s half a share of Apple.

These tokenised stocks can be traded on Allo’s exchange, AlloX, which operates 24/7 with an on-chain order book. Trades settle instantly or near-instantly, eliminating the two-day settlement period standard in traditional markets.

alloBTC (Bitcoin Liquid Staking)

Let’s walk through how someone would actually use Allo to buy tokenised stocks:

1. Account Setup

Users connect a Web3 wallet like MetaMask, Binance Wallet, or Phantom. Alternatively, they can sign up with just an email address. The platform handles wallet creation in the background for users who don’t want to manage private keys.

During signup, users complete KYC (Know Your Customer) verification. This is required because tokenised stocks are still securities subject to regulatory compliance.

2. Deposit Funds

Users deposit stablecoins (USDC, USDT), other cryptocurrencies, or fiat currency through integrated payment rails. The platform supports deposits on multiple chains including Ethereum, Arbitrum, and BNB Chain.

3. Browse and Trade

For a platform marketing zero trading fees, keeping blockchain costs low is essential. The chain can process 100-150 transactions per second with 3-second block times, enabling the responsive trading experience users expect from centralised exchanges.

Because BNB Chain is Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compatible, developers can use familiar tools and smart contracts can be easily ported from Ethereum. This lowers development costs and speeds time to market. Building on BNB Chain also provides natural integration points with Binance exchange, Binance Wallet, and other Binance ecosystem products, helping with user acquisition and liquidity.

Someone in crypto looked at that and thought “we should do this with blockchains.”

The project is called Hemi. They put a full Bitcoin node inside an Ethereum Virtual Machine. Not a bridge to Bitcoin. Not an oracle. An actual Bitcoin node, running inside the EVM, downloading real Bitcoin blocks, maintaining the full UTXO set, which smart contracts can query directly.

This sounds like something you’d propose at a hackathon at 3am, but there’s over $1 billion sitting on it.

Bitcoin is secure but limited. Ethereum is flexible but less secure. What if you just stuck one inside the other?

If smart contracts can directly read Bitcoin’s state without trusting anyone, you can build things that weren’t practical before. A lending protocol where collateral checks happen by querying Bitcoin’s UTXO set from inside Solidity. An exchange where the smart contract watches Bitcoin transactions in real time. Hemi is a Layer 2 protocol that connects Bitcoin and Ethereum into what they call a “supernetwork.”

The core idea is to let developers build applications that can read Bitcoin’s blockchain state directly while running on an Ethereum-compatible virtual machine. This means smart contracts can interact with Bitcoin data, verify Bitcoin transactions, and respond to Bitcoin events without relying on external oracles or third-party data providers.

It’s worth understanding how this actually works, because the implementation details matter when you’re talking about securing potentially billions in assets.

The Hemi Virtual Machine (hVM)

The hVM is a full Bitcoin node embedded inside an Ethereum Virtual Machine. Not conceptually. Literally. A complete Bitcoin full node running within an EVM environment.

This unlocks smart contracts that query Bitcoin directly. Check transaction history. Verify UTXOs. Confirm balances. Track specific satoshis moving through the network. No oracles. No third-party data feeds.

For developers, the workflow stays familiar. Write in Solidity. Use the same tools and frameworks you already know. Except now your contracts see Bitcoin’s state natively.

Building a lending protocol with Bitcoin collateral? Verify deposits on-chain yourself. Creating BTC-settled options? Your contract confirms the Bitcoin transaction directly. No trust required.

The hVM uses custom precompiled contracts as built-in Bitcoin query functions. They pull transaction data, check confirmations, retrieve fee stats, and track metaprotocols like Ordinals and BRC-20 tokens.

Synchronisation happens through the Tiny Bitcoin Daemon (TBC), a lightweight process on each Hemi node. It connects to Bitcoin, downloads blocks, and ensures every node sees identical Bitcoin state at each block height.

Proof-of-Proof Consensus

Hemi anchors its security to Bitcoin through Proof-of-Proof (PoP), co-invented by Hemi co-founder Max Sanchez.

Hemi produces blocks like any Layer 2. Every few blocks (a “keystone period”), PoP Miners snapshot Hemi’s state and publish it as a Bitcoin transaction.

PoP Miners aren’t Bitcoin miners. They’re specialised participants who monitor Hemi, create cryptographic proofs of its state, embed them in Bitcoin transactions, pay BTC fees, and earn HEMI rewards.

After a PoP transaction confirms in a Bitcoin block, Hemi detects it through its native Bitcoin awareness. Wait 90 minutes (nine Bitcoin blocks), and the transaction achieves “Bitcoin finality.”

Meaning? Reversing it requires a 51% attack on Bitcoin itself. You’d need to reorganise Bitcoin’s blockchain, remove the PoP publications, create an alternate Hemi chain, and publish it faster than the legitimate one.

Cost estimate: over $20 billion in hardware alone, plus ongoing electricity. Economically impossible, even for nation-states.

This dual-security model is what Hemi calls “Superfinality.” An attacker needs majority control of both Bitcoin and Hemi simultaneously.

Tunnels for Asset Movement

Hemi’s “Tunnels” system moves assets between chains using two custodianship models:

High-Value Vaults (BitVM) use large validator sets with a 1-of-n trust assumption. Even one honest validator prevents theft. Disputed withdrawals take 2-4 weeks and cost $1,000 to $10,000 in Bitcoin fees. For institutions moving millions, acceptable.

Low-Value Vaults use overcollateralised custodians staking 1.5x the asset value. Two-thirds must approve withdrawals. Faster and cheaper than BitVM, but requires trusting economic incentives.

Liquidity Providers speed things up by maintaining assets on both chains, enabling instant swaps for a fee while processing actual vault operations in the background.

The Numbers Behind Hemi

Hemi launched its mainnet in late 2025 with backing from a $15 million funding round. The round was co-led by Binance Labs (now YZi Labs) and Breyer Capital, with participation from Republic Digital, HyperChain Capital, Big Brain Holdings, Crypto.com, DNA Fund, Selini Capital, and others.

This brought Hemi’s total funding to $30 million, following an earlier seed round.

The HEMI token went live on Binance in September 2025 as part of their HODLer Airdrop program. The airdrop distributed 100 million tokens (1% of total supply) to users who staked BNB. The token launched with trading pairs against USDT, USDC, BNB, FDUSD, and TRY.

Following the Binance listing, the token also launched on Gate, Toobit, BYDFi, WEEX, and later on Hyperliquid for perpetual futures trading with up to 3x leverage.

As of late September 2025, reported metrics include:

• Total Value Locked (TVL): Between $250 million and $1.2 billion depending on the data source. DefiLlama reports around $279 million, positioning Hemi as the second-largest Bitcoin sidechain by this metric. Other sources suggest higher numbers.

• Active protocols: Over 90 projects building on Hemi

• Verified users: More than 100,000

• Community members: Around 400,000

The token has a maximum supply of 10 billion HEMI. The allocation includes community rewards, ecosystem development, team tokens, and investor shares. An additional 100 million tokens were reserved for marketing campaigns within six months of the announcement.

The platform enables several categories of applications that weren’t previously viable.

Bitcoin DeFi Without Wrappers

For 16 years, Bitcoin and Ethereum have existed as separate ecosystems. Hemi is the first serious attempt to treat them as components of a unified system rather than isolated networks connected by bridges.

Unlike Stacks (which uses its own smart contract language) or BOB (which relies on bridges to other ecosystems), Hemi embeds a Bitcoin node inside an EVM-compatible environment, giving smart contracts direct access to Bitcoin’s state.

The technical approach is novel. Embed a full Bitcoin node in an EVM so smart contracts can read both chains natively. The team has credibility. The funding is substantial. The early metrics show real usage, even if the exact numbers are disputed.

Whether this becomes the dominant Bitcoin L2 or one of several viable options depends on execution, developer adoption, and whether the market actually wants Bitcoin-Ethereum interoperability at the protocol level.

B2X amplifies bitcoin exposure through a clever combination of borrowing and purchasing. Instead of just getting a loan against your bitcoin, B2X automatically uses those loan proceeds to purchase additional bitcoin, effectively doubling your bitcoin holdings. If you start with 1 bitcoin, B2X gives you a loan to buy another 1 bitcoin, leaving you holding 2 bitcoin while owing the dollar equivalent of the loan.

The financial mechanics create leveraged exposure without requiring additional cash investment. Your original bitcoin serves as collateral while the loan funds purchase more bitcoin at current market prices. When you repay the loan, you keep both the original bitcoin and the purchased bitcoin, capturing any price appreciation on the full 2 bitcoin position. If bitcoin's price increases 50% during your loan term, you benefit from that gain on twice your original holdings.

B2X carries the same loan terms as regular bitcoin-backed loans, including the 50% loan-to-value ratio, 12-month maximum term, and current interest rates around 12.4% APR. The key difference is that you're making a leveraged bet on bitcoin's price movement rather than accessing cash for other purposes. This product appeals specifically to users who want to increase their bitcoin exposure without deploying additional capital.

USDC Growth accounts serve users looking to earn yield on stablecoin holdings rather than borrowing against bitcoin. These accounts function like high-yield savings accounts, offering up to 8.5% annual percentage yield on USDC deposits. The accounts have no minimum balance requirements, no lock-up periods, and no fees for deposits or withdrawals.

The yield generation comes from lending to Ledn's bitcoin-backed loan customers. When someone takes a bitcoin-backed loan, they're essentially borrowing from the USDC Growth account pool. This creates a direct connection between the two product lines and ensures that Growth account yields are backed by overcollateralised bitcoin loans rather than speculative trading or high-risk investments.

Ledn emphasises that Growth account funds are ring-fenced, meaning they're kept separate from company operational funds and other business activities. This segregation protects Growth account holders from platform-level risks and ensures their funds are only exposed to the specific lending activities that generate their yield. The 2:1 collateralisation ratio on bitcoin loans provides additional protection, as borrowers post twice the value in bitcoin collateral compared to the loan amount.

Digital asset management provides the foundational account infrastructure for all other services. This includes secure wallet functionality, instant transfers between other Ledn users, and basic account management tools. There are two key players:

• Strategy & Vault Curators: These are the builders. They design AI-powered strategies, package them into vaults, and earn emissions based on performance and demand. High-yielding, high-TVL vaults earn more and get bonus multipliers if protocols vote on them using veALMANAK.

• Liquidity Providers: They supply the capital. By depositing into vaults, they get ERC-20 vault tokens and access to sophisticated strategies. They also earn emissions, plus any yield generated by the strategies themselves.

This setup eliminates speculation-based farming. Only vaults with actual usage and real performance earn emissions. No artificial pumps. No “just stake and wait” mechanics. If your strategy’s good and people use it, you get paid.

So instead of one-size-fits-all farming, Almanak’s system rewards what matters: effective strategy design, capital coordination, and on-chain results. And that coordination is driven not by hype, but by aligned incentives across builders, users, and protocols.

Traditional hedge funds employ teams of quantitative analysts, developers, and risk managers to build and execute strategies. This infrastructure costs millions and requires significant expertise barriers.

The platform reports rapid adoption in its early phases. In July, the first-ever community-run vault on Almanak reached $5 million capacity within 24 hours, then $10 million shortly after, and now surpassing $27 million in TVL

Almanak's total addressable market spans four segments: DeFi TVL and trading volume, centralised exchange activity, real-world assets on-chain, and eventually traditional markets.

Almanak's thesis is that 99% of assets will eventually be managed algorithmically through verifiable and deterministic strategies. Traditional finance already sees high algorithmic execution rates in many markets. Crypto is catching up, and Almanak positions itself to capture this transition.

Whether this actually democratises returns or simply creates new forms of alpha concentration remains to be seen. But the technical foundation for agent-based finance is clearly advancing rapidly.

The sad part is even if I'd kept those cards, trading them would still have been a nightmare. List on eBay, pray someone bids, package carefully, ship with insurance, hold your breath until delivery confirmation. One damaged corner during shipping? There goes half the value. International buyer? Good luck with customs and three-week delivery times.

The collectibles market is massive and estimated to grow from $400 billion in 2024 to $600+ billion globally by 2032, a Credence Research report showed. Yet, the experience of trading collectibles feels like that from the Stone Age. Until now.

Last weekend, I discovered something that made me question everything I thought I knew about collecting. A San Francisco-based startup called Courtyard.io is taking on the biggest problem in collectibles: making them actually tradeable.

The $50M Problem That Shouldn't Exist

Picture this: You own a $5,000 graded Pokémon card. Someone in Tokyo wants to buy it. You're both willing to make the deal, but now what?

You could ship it internationally (risky, expensive, slow), meet in person (impossible), or use a traditional auction house (30%+ fees, 30+ day settlement). Every option sucks.

Or consider this: You see a card you want on eBay. The seller has 98% positive feedback, the photos look good, but is it authentic? Is it damaged? Will it arrive safely? You're essentially gambling thousands of dollars on a stranger's honesty and shipping skills.

This friction explains why most collectibles sit in storage doing nothing. They're assets without liquidity, like owning stock in a company that never trades.

But what if there's now a way to buy a $10,000 sports card, instantly resell it for 90% of market value with zero questions asked, or trade ownership globally in seconds — all without the physical card ever leaving a secure vault?

Why Previous NFT Collectibles Failed

CryptoKitties and NBA Top Shot tried to create artificial collectibles from scratch. Digital cats and video highlights had no intrinsic value beyond speculation. Once the hype died, they became worthless.

The core problem was to manufacture demand for purely digital assets with artificial scarcity.

Courtyard's approach is different because it tokenises real collectibles people already want. Pokémon cards were valuable before blockchain existed. The NFT represents ownership of something tangible in a Brink's vault, not a speculative digital artifact.

The lesson for founders is to not create new collectible categories, but to bet on making it easier to trade collectibles for which demand already exists.

From Wallet to Pokémon Cards

When I decided to test Courtyard.io, I expected the usual crypto complexity. What I found was one of the smoothest onboardings I've experienced in Web3.

Setting up was surprisingly simple: I could fund my account via Google Pay, credit card, bank transfer, or by connecting a crypto wallet — say a Phantom or a MetaMask. I connected my Phantom wallet but realised the platform uses USDC on Polygon. So I quickly swapped some SOL for USDC (Polygon) directly in Phantom, which took me under a minute.

The interface felt like Amazon: Clean product pages, intuitive filters, professional photography. I could browse by category (Pokémon, sports cards, comics), price range ($6 to $250,000!), or rarity. What stood out for me was the pricing transparency. Every item showed current market value, recent sales history, and clear condition details.

And it only got interesting. Unlike eBay's "Buy It Now or Bid" model, Courtyard lets you negotiate on everything. I could make offers with custom expiration times, effectively saying "I'll pay $X for this card, and this offer stands for Y hours or days or months." It felt like having a personal dealer relationship with every seller.

What I found the coolest was the digital pack opening. I bought a $25 mystery pack and watched a slick animation reveal my card, followed by a graded Pokémon piece now sitting in a Brink's vault with my name on it. The gamification was perfect: all the excitement of pack ripping with none of the physical storage headaches.

The 90% Safety Net

Every single item on Courtyard comes with an instant buyback guarantee at 90% of market value.

Think about that. I could buy a $1,000 card, immediately change my mind, and get $900 back instantly. No listing fees, no waiting for buyers, no negotiation. The platform acts as a market maker, always willing to buy at 90% FMV.

This addresses the biggest problem in collectibles trading head-on: providing liquidity. Traditional collectibles markets offer zero liquidity safety nets. Buy a card on eBay and realise you made a mistake? You're stuck listing it yourself, paying fees, and hoping someone wants it.

Courtyard’s Got VC Attention

Courtyard made around $50,000 in monthly sales in January 2024. Today, just over 18 months later, they're hitting $50 million per month.

That's a 1,000x increase.

Their recent $30 million Series A, led by Forerunner Ventures with participation from NEA and Y Combinator, values the company's approach to solving the trillion-dollar collectibles market's biggest problem: liquidity.

The startup makes money when it buys cards back from customers for 90% of its value and resells it to customers in a new mystery pack. The same card is sold an average of eight times a month on the platform, the company said.

Think about that: the average card on Courtyard trades 8 times per month. In traditional collectibles markets, a card might sit on a shelf for years between transactions.

The Brink's Partnership

Courtyard has partnered with Brink's, the global leader in total cash management, route-based secure logistics and payment solutions, to ensure the highest levels of security and accountability for physical assets.

Your $10,000 Pokémon card sits in the same vaults that protect gold for central banks. Every physical card in Courtyard's system gets authenticated, insured and stored in a Brink's-operated vault. The tokenised collectible acts as a digital voucher for proof of ownership and authenticity, and enables the physical asset to be traded without having to be physically moved around or re-authenticated at each sale.

Want the physical card? At any point, the owner of the NFT can choose to redeem it in exchange for the physical asset.

How Courtyard Actually Works

Step 1: Tokenisation - Physical collectibles are authenticated and stored in Brink's vaults. Each item gets minted as an NFT on Polygon, representing legal ownership of the physical asset.

Step 2: Trading - You buy/sell ownership of physical collectibles through NFT transactions. The actual card never moves unless you specifically request delivery.

Step 3: Liquidity - Can't find a buyer? Courtyard instantly purchases at 90% market value. Want to speculate? List at any price on their zero-fee marketplace.

Step 4: Redemption - Want the physical item? Burn the NFT and Courtyard ships the card from the vault to your door.

Why Courtyard Stands Apart

The collectibles storage and trading space has several players:

Traditional Platforms

• eBay: Largest marketplace but zero liquidity guarantees, high fees, shipping risks

• Heritage Auctions: High-end focus with 20%+ buyer premiums

Emerging Competitors

• Alt: Focuses on liquid auctions for high-value cards (they vault Stephen Curry's $5.9M card)

• StockX: Vault NFTs for sneakers and cards, though they've faced legal battles with Nike

• Rally: Fractional ownership of collectibles, but you own shares, not the actual item

What sets Courtyard apart is their instant liquidity model. While competitors require you to wait for buyers or auctions, Courtyard acts as the market maker—always ready to buy at 90% FMV.

As Nicole Johnson from Forerunner explained to Fortune: "That might sound like a small thing, but it's a big unlock: it lowers the barrier to entry in a category that's historically been tough to navigate."

The User Experience

What surprised me most was how addictive the experience became. Here are some of the takeaways from the product.

• Market dependency: 90% buyback only works if Courtyard maintains accurate pricing

• Platform risk: You're trusting a startup with high-value assets

Some of the users got lucky with a steal deal.

While others raised some challenges.

Whether you're a serious collector tired of eBay's friction, an investor looking for alternative assets, or just someone curious about Web3's practical applications, Courtyard deserves attention.

They've found the sweet spot: making physical collectibles as liquid as crypto, with none of the volatility and all of the security.

It’d be interesting to see if they can maintain their instant liquidity promise as they scale to billions in volume, and whether other industries will adopt similar tokenisation models.

For now, they've innovated a way to collect, trade, and invest in physical assets with digital efficiency. And after experiencing it firsthand, I'm convinced this is just the beginning.
