BAYC NFTs worth $1.9M got stolen from a user
A collector of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) confirmed recently that his $1.9 million collections of Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs had been "hacked," but NFT marketplace OpenSea had "frozen" the assets for him.
Todd Kramer, the owner of the New York-based Ross+Kramer art gallery, tweeted that he had clicked on a link that seemed to be a real NFT Dapp (decentralized application). However, it turned out to be a phishing scam, and 16 of his NFTs were lost as a result. "I've been hacked, and all my apes have vanished," he wrote.
Bored Ape project has been one of the most successful in the NFT space, and so far, nearly $1 billion has been spent on trading Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs.The NFTs stolen from Kramer's collection included eight Bored Apes, seven Mutant Apes—generated by exposing a Bored Ape to "mutant serum"— and a single Clonex NFT. Per Dappradar's NFT Value Estimator, the total value stolen is around $1.9 million.
"Update. All Apes are frozen. Waiting for the opensea team to get in, lessons learned. Use a hard wallet. I never knew so many troll accounts existed, Kindness prevails, and the community is great. I know #wagmi just a rough night— toddkramer.eth "
Kramer added that he would use a hardware wallet in the future to keep his assets safe. Currently, 4 of his apes are recovered with the help of the BAYC community and the marketplace.
